Chapter 30

Missives Beyond the Sect

Elder Olg sauntered in like he owned the place, the smile on his face as languid as his steps. His expression didn’t change when he glanced at Folend or Elder Alm, nor when his look finally settled on Rieren.

“Elder Olg,” Elder Alm said. “How kind of you to join us. I hope you have heard what has been going on here. A vital understanding seems to be missing in young Vallorne’s comprehension.”

“Is that so, Elder Alm?” Elder Olg looked at Rieren critically, like he could read the missing “vital understanding” on her face. “Hmm, I don’t believe I see anything wrong with my pupil, Elder Alm.”

Elder Alm hesitated for just a second. It was one thing to start bullying some random disciple, but it was another to start berating a student of the sect who had been claimed by an Elder for their own. “Surely Elder Olg, you too see that we must all cooperate and help each other grow as much as we can. We must work together, lest we suffer the same fate.”

The same fate in question was obviously the destruction of Lionshard Sect in the previous timeline. But Elder Olg wasn’t impressed.

“Perhaps,” he said. “But, as you yourself said, we in the sect are dedicated to our disciples. We must help them all reach their potential. It is, however, an undoubted fact that some have much greater potential than others. As you mentioned, Edler Alm, we must all assist each other to grow as much as we can. Isn’t that right?”

“Well, yes, but—”

“Then I believe that settles the matter, doesn’t it? I understand Rieren can sometimes be difficult to understand, with how she talks now, but her point is valid all the same. As one of our most promising disciples, as someone who rose so meteorically last time, it behooves us all the sect to shower her with all she needs for her growth. For the good of Lionshard Sect.”

“For the good of Lionshard Sect…” Elder Alm muttered.

Rieren kept her smile to herself. Good old Elder Olg giving his opponents a taste of their own medicine.

Elder Alm had come in trying to nitpick the statement Rieren had delivered to Folend. Now, he was facing the same trick used against him.

Before Elder Alm could find a stronger reply, Rollo finally emerged from within the menagerie. He took one look around and decided that it was too much trouble. For Rieren, he spared the briefest grin, before starting to walk away.

“Thanks for waiting,” he said as he trudged off with his hands in the pockets of his robes. “Come on, Folend, we’re done here.”

Folend glared at Rieren for a moment before stalking after his companion. Rieren watched them go. Dumb Bastards. One of these days, she would need to put them all in their place. Including, as she turned her head, Elder Alm.

Though, that last one was going to need to wait for a while.

“Take care that you do not let go of your vision for the sect,” Elder Alm said, before he too walked off, his eyes shooting a parting glare.
